the weed debate
i just wanted to get the irrelevant arguing out of the regular feed of my followers as well as move all future weed-related messages to a certain area. i didn’t want people’s opinions to go unheard, and don’t worry, none of the messages will be altered.
it all stemmed from this ”lay off the weed” post, and i responded to the comments here.
then came a thank-you, followed shortly by a few back-and-forth messages:
anonymous: Thank you for the post about weed. It’s the one thing which poses me off about tumblr; the amount of people who support smoking weed. I’ve smoked it twice BEFORE I did a course in Psychology and learnt about all the shit it does to your brain, and have never touched it since. I understand each to their own but there’s clearly a reason why it’s illegal.
anonymous: yeah… the person trying to diss marijuana sounds like an idiot. they probably should’ve kept smoking. it’s “LEARNED” not “learnt”, dumbass. Weed smokers are smarter than non-weed smokers, obviously.
me: sup spelling nazi!
i’m all for proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation, but to imply that intelligence is directly correlated with spelling? it is to an extent, but this person’s insight was still good (and appreciated, just as yours is) nonetheless.
anonymous: okay to that person TRYING to tell the person “dissing” weed that learnt is wrong, it’s right you dip shit. google it, learnt is a british english word, so do your research before you go telling someone they’re wrong. thank you :)
me: :)
anonymous: it’s not about spelling, it’s about how you TALK. do you SAY “learnt”, or “learned”? I’m pretty sure you say “learn” because that’s how it should be said, right? Maybe someone will take your crappy little pot-dissing blog seriously if you didn’t have so many idiots backing you up.
me: you so hostile! (oh wait… are you gonna attack me and my “crappy little pot-dissing blog” for that too?)
say learned and learnt out loud right now, the difference is so minute— there’s no need to go crazy now. i hope you don’t always take grammar this seriously when people use slang online…
my intent was to discourage others from starting to smoke weed, and prior to all the hate, that was my only entry on the subject. but nope, a few of you pot smokers (i’m sure many other people who smoke pot saw my entry and didn’t feel the need to get so defensive) resorted to attacking my character/irrelevant things, rather than focusing primarily on what i wrote. and now you’re worrying about grammar? if you were in court, you’d lose your case with all this.
k, i’m done replying/ruining the atmosphere of my blog (sorry to all my followers!). if you wanna continue, msg me without using anonymous and i’ll respond privately. time to run. deuces!
anonymous: I’m the anon who left the message about me not being keen on the amount of people who smoke pot. I’m the anon who said ‘learnt’ instead of learned. I’m an Aussie, we say learnt, we use British english, not American English. Besides, I did a typo with the word ‘pisses’ I typed ‘posses.’
I’m just amazed that people want to reject my opinion over me saying the word ‘learnt.’
Seriously tumblr people? Seriously?
I would prefer you rejecting my opinion if you could find some solid researched information which explains how people WILL benefit from smoking pot. I’m cool with that, go ahead, I like learning new things, just don’t reject my argument because I type some words differently. Anyway. That’s all I have to say. I was amused at the amount of response it got actually.
anonymous: hey, another person here who smokes weed on a semi-regular basis. i’d just like to point out a few things:
- there’s not more tar or more carcinogens in marijuana than cigarettes. most weed, contrary to popular belief, isn’t laced, which means it’s just smoke. cigarettes, on the other hand, are made of a disgusting chemical soup. so whoever told you that clearly doesn’t use logic. :P
- marijuana doesn’t kill brain cells. it just has an effect on your brain while you’re high. i’d link you to a few things but i don’t think tumblr lets people do that.
- a bit of real health advice to stoners - invest in a vaporizer! that way, you’re just inhaling THC vapor instead of smoke. trust me, it’s way worth it if you want to be able to exercise without wheezing.
anyways, that’s it. :) great blog!
me: you tumblr users have already clarified that laced weed is pretty uncommon, and so i acknowledge that i totally made a mistake there. however, yes, marijuana does contain ~50-70% more carcinogenic hydrocarbons than tobacco smoke— a simply google search proves that.
there are no proven links between marijuana and cancer, but it’s often noted that people who smoke weed inhale more deeply and hold their breath longer than cigarette smokers, which leads to dysregulated growth of cells in lung tissue (source of info: national institute on drug abuse).
in regards to #2, correct me if i’m wrong, but i don’t think i ever said that smoking weed kills brain cells. someone else may have, but i know i didn’t.
while we’re on the topic of the brain, it has already been proven that smoking weed can impair one’s ability to convert short-term memory into long-term memory. impaired coordination and perception are other immediate effects.
as for long-term effects, you’re absolutely right. as of right now, there is no 100% guarantee that weed kills brain cells— but there’s also no guarantee that it doesn’t. the studies out there right now are currently contradicting each other, but hopefully, we’ll get something conclusive in the near future.
and as for #3, which i’ve already mentioned in response to a comment, i definitely agree with you there. if you’re gonna smoke weed, use a vaporizer.
thank you for the compliment as well as for your input! :)
inspiredxloser: RE: the weed debate. I agree with you completely. Firstly, on a VERY simple, logical level .. our lungs were designed to process oxygen and send it throughout our bodies … inhaling anything else is OBVS not going to be good for them.
On a more personal note, my sister is quite a heavy smoker and while I can’t prove it is in direct correlation to the weed, she is extremely emotional and short tempered (to the point where I personally think she has an anxiety disorder), makes a lot of poor decisions, can’t hold down a job and never has any money. I don’t really doubt that even if they weren’t caused by weed, they are exasperated by it.
It also REALLY pisses me off when I find out I’m in a car with people who are carrying weed. Especially my friend who is a nurse .. like what is that going to do for your career if you get charged with possession?
Gah! Long story short I back you completely :)
me: yeah, that’s kinda how i think of it. try to not take in anything that we really aren’t supposed to, that we weren’t designed to inhale.
see… you know firsthand. i mean, sometimes when smokers look at the negative effects, it may not always apply to them, or they can just deny, deny, deny. but a lot of the time it’s best to hear what family members have to say, because typically, they have seen the changes that their mother/son/daughter/brother/etc have gone through.
that bugs me too! i know to each his own, but when i see people in the health profession doing things that could hurt their health, i reallllly start to wonder… it’s a bit hypocritical.
thanks for backing me up, and thanks so much for your input! :)
